A Policeman's take on
Short Term Car Insurance
How was I to know that I needed
short term car insurance? I didn’t know short time car insurance existed
until the policeman asked me if I had it after I got pulled over. When I
told him it wasn’t even my car that I was driving, he said I still
should have called my agent and got a policy.
When the speedometer hit the 100 mile an hour mark, I saw the red lights
way back in the distance. I ignored the lights because I figured the
lights would fade as I kept my foot to the floor. When I was cruising at
120, the lights were still growing closer. There was only one thing I
could think of to do; take the next exit off the highway and continue my
speed pass on the dirt covered side street running alongside. The
dirt-storm was quite a sight, but it didn’t deter the police car one
bit.

I was back up to 120 on the dusty
road and could no longer see the trailing cruiser in my rear-view
mirror. I turned up the radio because the new road was loud at this
speed. The song playing was Born to be Wild, which encouraged me to push
the car harder and soon the speedo was registering a respectable 130.
The front end was shaking a little bit, but do you expect from ’81 Caddy
with over 200,000 miles?
My first mistake was trying to take the right hand turn at full speed.
The second mistake was reaching into the glove-box while I was doing it.
The next thing I know I’m rolling across a field with one hand on the
steering-wheel and the other hand still in the glove-box. I think I
broke my right arm when the passenger side of the car caved in, encasing
my arm in a mess of twisted steel and fine Corinthian leather.
The car came to rest on its roof. Not one, but 6 cop cars arrived on the
scene within seconds. One of the officers was able to cut me out of the
seatbelt and pull me from the driver’s window. After asking me if I was
alright, they put me in hand-cuffs and drove me downtown to the police
station.
It was at the police station when I first learned that short term car
insurance would have covered all the repairs to the Caddy. In fact, the
police captain told me that short term car insurance would have been
cheaper than buying a regular car insurance policy. Now they tell me.
